I have found a fun way to spend a day at the Capitol: have your children become Honorary Pages for the day! My kids have been sworn in on the floor of the House and when they chose to page for their senator, they got to carry in the flags for the flag ceremony. At the end of the day, we purchased a cd at the media department downstairs in the Capitol of their day on the Senate floor. They not only got a personal tour of the building but they learned how the process works. They met their senator and representative and were introduced by them to the chamber. This is a fantastic way to connect to your legislator!
The kids have to be 12 years old and there is a dress code to follow as well as a code of conduct. It is a professional setting so they would like the kids to act accordingly. The day begins at 8am and ends at 2pm. The Senate only takes 6 pages a day, Tuesday-Thursday. The House usually has 2 per representative.
If you're interested in this, it's a good idea to start early. The page program only runs with each biennium; not in the special sessions.
